1s | This house is in Spring City, Pennsylvania |
4s | A small town a little west of Philadelphia |
7s | This house used to be a bank building that was built in 1872, which is now my home |
14s | When I decided to purchase it, I knew the building well |
18s | because my very first job started out as a teller in 1972 in this bank |
26s | At the time I purchased it in 1989 it was actually a working bank |
30s | They had just closed it, almost like they had just closed it for the weekend |
33s | The teller booths were still here |
36s | The paperwork was still here |
38s | The vault existed, all the safety deposit boxes were still here |
42s | So I started to go through things and remodel |
44s | I had keys for a lot of the safety deposit boxes |
47s | and as I started to open them I started to find bills, coins, |
52s | bills that were actually printed in the basement of this bank |
57s | Old savings, passbook information, ledgers, not worth antyhing unfortunately now |
64s | but I like to keep it just as memorabilia |
66s | I tired to preserve as much of the bank as possible when converting it into a house |
72s | but I knew I had to make it livable |
74s | I designed the layout, but mostly the bank designed itself |
79s | because I have a big vault that you know you can't remove the vault |
83s | I want to show off that there's a vault |
85s | I thought that was the coolest part of the whole house - is that I had a vault |
90s | And I knew right away it had to be a bar |
92s | and it already had the lock on top of the vault |
94s | so I knew the boardroom was gonna be my bedroom |
97s | and I just did one room at a time |
99s | I knew we needed a curve because it was so stark and square |
103s | so my first idea, it was to do a half circle |
106s | to put the dining room in a curve |
109s | but I still wanted to have the grandness of when you walk into a bank and you look up |
114s | and you get to see those ceilings |
116s | I still call this area my lobby even though it's all for the dining room |
120s | because this originally was the lobby |
122s | and the whole ceiling's original: the original skylight which still opens to let ventilation in |
128s | Every chandelier you see in here and the clock out front is original to this building |
133s | Now the basement of this place has the original vault from 1872 |
139s | There is no ventilation in this vault whatsoever |
141s | so the only thing I could think of to do with that was to put a sauna in there |
146s | In 1921 one of the largest bank robberies still to date on the east coast happened right here in this house |
152s | When it was the bank, seven robbers came in |
155s | there were seven board members, there were two employees, and there were two customers |
160s | and they held everyone hostage and locked them in the original vault in the basement |
165s | and one of the directors who had asthma actually suffocated, went into an asthma attack |
173s | People have seen shadow in here, they tell me all the time |
176s | Whoever it is seems to be friendly because they never bother me |
182s | I love living in this hosue because it's part of my history |
186s | part of the town's history, and I do think it's cool |
189s | I feel like a queen in this bank |
192s | It just makes me feel good and I'm very secure, I love it |
