5s | I always had this dream about playing on the river as an adult |
8s | and my dad is a log driver and my grandfathers were log drivers, and my great uncles |
13s | so they worked on this river, so it's kind of in my blood |
23s | So I was looking at buying a home |
24s | and then I was thinking of building a tiny house |
27s | and I wasn't sure if I wa going to be living around here for a long time |
30s | So I thought ok, tiny house, I can move it |
33s | and then at the time my friend who was the boatbuilder |
37s | we were always hanging out in his boats |
39s | and he just encouraged me to build a tiny houseboat |
43s | so I was really impulsive and said "Ok, fine, let's do it!" |
46s | And a few days later I bought the pontoon |
51s | So welcome to the river den. We're in Wakefield, Quebec |
54s | and this is the Gatineau River |
55s | |
58s | All the lights are run on twelve Bolts |
60s | And I just basically have a deep-cycle bolt battery in here |
64s | And it usually lasts around a month |
66s | I have a little pump, a built pump, and it just draws river water |
73s | and the river water is really clean |
75s | It's not drinking water but it's really nice and clean to do dishes with |
80s | and to brush your teeth and stuff |
82s | And under here is where the pump is. Just a small little pump. 100 dollars |
86s | Yeah everything was custom built: all the cabinets, the windows were even not built |
92s | We just bought the glass and it's double-pane with Argon and we built the frames |
99s | This is just a little butane burner |
102s | In the winter time, when I have a fire going, sometimes I make toast right on here |
106s | You can take the top right off and put a frying pan or a pot to boil water |
110s | or just to warm up food. It works really fast and really well |
113s | and I just use the bottom to make coffee |
115s | There's no refrigeration system yet and that's probably would be the thing that pushes me over the edge to get solar |
121s | I just use a cooler with ice for now |
133s | Here are the switches for all the utilities right now |
137s | So there's the pump and these are navigation lights for the boat |
139s | It is a boat that moves and there's a 60 horsepower motor on the back |
143s | Over here is an extra storage area and the shower |
148s | This is the bathroom and we recently invested in the separate |
155s | and this is a composting toilet, and it's a waterless toilet |
158s | so it separates the liquids from the solids and it has a really quiet 12-volt pump |
165s | It's great because you can't hear it and it dries out the solids really quickly and turns it into compost |
172s | and there's no odor whatsoever |
174s | Over here we have a deck in the back |
178s | |
180s | and this is storage for the gas tanks and the anchors |
187s | This is a grill floor and it's a great feature for the winter time |
192s | because the heat rises through the floor and also the dirt falls to the first level |
198s | so on the loft upstairs it's only about 5 feet high |
201s | and you don't have to crouch down and do any sweeping or cleaning |
203s | cus the dust just falls through the floor |
207s | We call this La Tanière, which means the wolfden |
210s | This is regular queen sized bed |
212s | and just some storage shelves, these are old crates |
216s | some extra blankets and stuff, and out here is a little door to go on the rooftop patio. Come on up! |
225s | So this is the rooftop patio. This wood is cedar |
230s | and I was thinking about extending the deck and having some railings over here |
233s | We have left this space originally for the solar panels to fit |
237s | So, we'll see... We'll see what happens with that |
