The story is about a turtle asking to race the much faster hare.

The hare makes fun of the slow turtle but agrees to a race. On the day of the race, the hare gets off to a fast start, and thinking he can easily win, the hare stops running and decides to rest before finishing the race. The hare then falls asleep.

While the hare is sleeping, the turtle continues slowly and steadily.

When the hare wakes up, he sees that the turtle is close to winning. The hare tries to get to the tree first, but the turtle wins the race before the hare can get there. The hare is upset that he lost to the slow turtle.
