📝 The rule
👉 “Raise” is a transitive verb i.e. a verb that requires an object (=something you can put up). This means that the subject carries out an action that is “received” by the object.
"I raise my voice."
"They raised their eyebrows in surprise."
👉 Sometimes it can also mean “to grow”: to raise tomatoes, to raise a child.
📝 The rule
👉 “Rise” is an "intransitive verb" i.e. a verb that doesn’t need an object to have full meaning. This means that the subject carries out the action on its own.
"I rise at 6AM every day."
"The sun rises in the east."
"The batter won’t rise unless you add yeast."
To rise 👉 there is not always a physical movement, sometimes the meaning is just “to increase”.
