The subjunctive to express the possibility
Share this article with others:
Oooh non,
on va encore parler du subjonctif ?
AGAIN?!
I hate this one...
Oui ! Mais, bonne nouvelle
!
This is one of the last lessons on it ;)
Bon d'accord
... but keep it short! I'm starting to have nightmares about a subjunctive monster...
There are a few structures that can be used to express a possibility in French. But those structures automatically trigger the subjunctive:
Il est possible que...
It is possible that...
Il est probable que...
It is probable that...
Et voilà quelques exemples :
Il est possible que
je sois
en retard à mon rendez-vous
.
It is possible that I will be late to my meeting.
Il est probable qu'
elle soit
secrétaire générale
.
It is probable that she will be secretary-general.
You can also express a possibility with these structures:
- possiblement:
Je serai
possiblement
en retard à mon rendez-vous.
- peut-être (que):
Je serai
peut-être
en retard à mon rendez-vous.
Peut-être que
je serai en retard à mon rendez-vous.
