5s | Hello, this is Bill Cunningham from the |
9s | fashion front and there's no question |
13s | we're not just in an evolution; we're in |
16s | a revolution. It has all to do with men's |
21s | perspective on dress and particularly a |
26s | new generation. We will see the sweep of |
29s | fashion. Starting, if you will, the Ralph |
33s | Lauren man in his very precise tailored |
37s | tweed suits, jackets, weskits, and then |
42s | you see the younger men, here, the jacket |
45s | as it would be all basted by a tailor |
47s | with basting thread. So it's taking a |
51s | very classic thing and tweaking it, |
55s | which is wonderful. Now the younger |
57s | generation are seeing men's dress in a |
60s | totally different way. Now of course |
62s | they're obviously not going to a board |
64s | meeting in a bank because they wouldn't get in |
67s | the door, but that's another question. |
69s | Look at the use of fur as a touch on men, |
73s | men's clothes, and the use of color. Then |
78s | you have the other young men showing us |
80s | that grunge - it's all being reinterpreted |
83s | by a new generation. Marc Jacobs started |
88s | it 20 years ago and, wow, it's back with a |
92s | force. As a matter of fact that's what |
95s | the - collection - Andy Simon's |
98s | collection was so criticized for |
100s | but there's something in the air and |
103s | it's all being reflected, not in women's |
106s | clothes, but men's clothes. But this young |
108s | fella in his full getup and he painted |
111s | his boots himself and embroidered his |
114s | leggings himself. And then when I looked, |
117s | I thought, "My God, he's got gold teeth." |
119s | Well they weren't gold teeth at all. They |
122s | were a grill. And of course, where would |
126s | you be without the hat? And not just a |
128s | hat. Look at the rakish angle of these |
131s | hats. Of course, how Buck Rogers got in |
134s | there, it's - I think it's kind |
136s | marvelous. Looks like the fin of a |
138s | Cadillac 1950 Cadillac car, doesn't it? |
142s | It's a very, very interesting time to be |
146s | observing fashion. Fashion throughout |
149s | recorded history has been a marvelous |
152s | barometer. In retrospect, historians study |
156s | fashion. And we're seeing it now played |
160s | out right before our eyes in the 21st |
164s | century. So I don't - I mean it's very |
167s | easy just to laugh and pass it off that |
170s | all this is going along with gay |
172s | marriage and all this... they can dress any |
174s | way they want... but it's much more than |
176s | that. Much more than that. The peacock is |
179s | emerging. He's been a sparrow since |
184s | mid-Victorian times. We had the beginning of |
187s | the peacock revolution in the 60s. |
189s | Well, I think we're seeing the full |
191s | |
